Here is one I saw a long time ago and can't find the resolution in my notes.
NDR message reads: "5.1.0 - Unknown address error 553-'5.1.8 <user(a)domain>...
Domain of sender address user(a)domain does not exist'"

This happens intermittently when a user attempts to send mail outside of our
organization. In this case, the user was me, so I know for a fact that my
account is valid and the domain is valid.

Exchange 5.5 SP4 running in a Windows 2000 AD.

I'm going to go did the the entries now and will come back and kill this
question if I find the answer.

Thanx

I suspect that recipient is querying your server for the address by starting
a message transfer to it.

Mark,

This could be a problem on the recipient's end. Their server is trying
to see if your domain is valid. Sometimes due to some DNS or other
network problem the receiving server cannot find your server and treats
your email as garbage. Try contacting the recipient and find out what do
they use.
