iMac G5, OS X 10.5.8

The principal symptom is that about a minute after the computer goes
to sleep the fan speeds up and the keyboard and mouse are dead. The
only thing to do is power down.

Another symptom is that the computer takes about 6 minutes to boot,
most of that time spent in the blue screen.

A third sumptom is that the preferences are set to go to sleep after
three hours (we like to use the screen saver as a photo album
display) but this afternoon it went to sleep (and then hung) after
one hour.

I conducted an experiment.

Time
5:16:00 Put computer to sleep
17:03 Fan speeds up
18:00 Power OFF
23:00 Power ON
23:17 Gray screen
24:50 Blue screen
29:20 Computer UP displaying wallpaper and opening aps as
expected.

Some of the times might be off by a few seconds.

Below is the Console Log for the relevant period. Note the line at
5:28:59 "(com.apple.ReportPanic[103])". I think I have a hardware
problem.

Suggestions?

I'd say one of the most likely culprits will be a USB or Firewire device
connected to the machine whose driver is misbehaving at sleep or wake
time, possibly due to a hardware issue on the device itself.

Another potential culprit is a malfunctioning PCI card or driver that is
malfunctioning at sleep time.

What devices do you have connected?

Try disconnecting all but essential devices (mouse and keyboard) and see
if the problem goes away.

Just mouse, keyboard, and an external firewire drive for Time
Machine. (This is my wife's computer.)

> Try disconnecting all but essential devices (mouse and keyboard) and see

[Gives self dope slap.] Time Machine is not working. Finder does not
see the drive. Moved the drive to this computer and it works fine.
The last TM entry is from 15 June, the day before we went away on
vacation. We have been back five days and there are no entries from
that period.

Evidently something happened while we were away, but I can't imagine
what. No other electronics in the house show damage, and the
computer was attached to an UPS that was turned off.

Removal of the Time Machine drive and turning Time Machine off have
no effect on system behavior: it still takes more than five minutes
to boot and shortly after going to sleep it freezes and the fan
speeds up.

I have made an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow afternoon.
(Maybe this will provide my excuse to pass my 17" Core Duo on to her
and buy myself a shiny new iMac.)

Curiouser and curiouser.

I took the computer to the Genius Bar and of course none of the
above symptoms recurred. The tech suggested that having unplugged
the system to bring it to the Apple Store caused a power reset that
cleared everything.

(I've turned a machine off to reset it, but never had to unplug
one.)

Anyway, his remark reminded me that the computer is plugged into an
UPS. It's ordinarily shut down every night, but the UPS stays on.
When we left for our trip I turned off the UPS. When we returned and
powered everything up, the above symptoms appeared. It appears that
being disconnected from power caused the problems and a second
disconnection from power corrected them. Can this be?

HOWEVER. Now we have something new. The computer no longer panics
when put to sleep, it won't go to sleep at all. Command it to sleep
and the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then pops right back
up.

So I left the computer at the Apple Store overnight for them to run
diagnostics.

Stay tuned...

The Apple tech said that when he ran the computer from his disk he
found no problems. He concluded that there was no hardware problem
so it must be software so suggested I reinstall the OS.

Meanwhile, from the moment I brought the computer to the Genius Bar
the on/off switch on the back of the machine started exhibiting a
new problem: the power button had to be pressed many times before
the system would finally power up. The tech said he couldn't replace
the switch, only the whole back plate, and that would cost over
$200.

So I brought it home. It's been working for a couple of days. The
on/off switch performs normally. Firewire and Time Machine work. No
problem with kernel panic after going to sleep because it will not
go to sleep; it sleeps for only a few seconds, then pops back to
life. We can live with that.

If serious problems recur I'll try reinstalling OS X but I don't
think that's where the problem lies. I believe we have a transient
hardware problem in the power supply.
