Awesome logic there.

: What's the big deal? You either buy something at a local store, or -
: if there's no local store or your local store doesn't stock it - you
: buy over the internet. If you go the internet route, there are dozens
: of sources. If B&H's shipping costs are a deterrent, pick another
: source. It's not like B&H is the only source for anything. They
: don't need you, and you don't need them.

Sometimes you can game the system; sometimes the system pushes back. Yesterday
I ordered a camera from Adorama (B&H didn't have it in stock), along with a
spare battery and a couple of SD cards. The whole order was under a "free
shipping" deal. Adorama didn't have the battery in stock, a note on the Web
site indicating that it would still ship free, even if it came separately
later. But they sent me back an email warning me that the battery was
back-ordered from Canon and they didn't know when they'd get it.

But it turned out that B&H, which didn't have the camera, did have the
battery. So I ordered it from them instead, paying their minimum shipping
charge of $4.95, even though the battery is of negligible size and weight.

As it happens, I had ordered $375 worth of odds and ends from B&H earlier in
the day. If I had planned better, I could have included the battery in that
order, and it probably wouldn't have affected the shipping charge at all.

But overall I made out just fine. Since neither store has a presence in
Massachusetts, I didn't have to pay sales tax on any of the stuff. At 6.5% (or
whatever it is these days), I saved a lot more than $4.95.

They recently renovated their store and now the entire top floor is
dedicated to photo gear. It's quite a place, particularly their "system" of
how the goods get from the stockroom to the retail floor. It keeps the
theft rate way, way down.

I try only to go when I have a particular purchase in mind. There have been
times when I walk in "just to look," but I find it hard to walk out without
making some purchase.

And this is the reason why my dear wife won't let me go in the place
anymore.
