From: Dave W on 8 Jun 2010 23:27 Hey Guys, I have a potential new job and would like to get a feel for what is happening on 7 servers. I think they've been over-engineered but can't say for sure. Is there a way to figure out what the load is on each machine throughout the day so I can tell if the hardware is getting taxed or under utilized. Have you done this over a period of time to get a feel for usage? Any tips are greatly appreciated. -dave
From: Russ SBITS.Biz [SBS-MVP] on 9 Jun 2010 01:38 Is this a SBS Environment? And IMO there are different tools on 2003 than 2008 However there is this tool from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=31fccd98-c3a1-4644-9622-faa046d69214&displaylang=en But there are MANY MANY third party tools out there. Also some of this IMO comes from experience. Are you trying to reduce the servers into virtual machines? I'm definitely thinking about reducing the machines into VM's but also moving Exchange/Blackberry to the cloud. Email uptime is a big thing for them. Aside from the Microsoft tool, do you like something better? Thanks for the reply Russ.
From: Russ SBITS.Biz [SBS-MVP] on 10 Jun 2010 18:30 I've never consolidated 7 servers before (Well I have but that was 15 years ago.) only 3 so I wouldn't be a good person to ask. *And the 3 I knew would handle it.) Try a Regular server group maybe?
