If from the "display properties" window you select the "Desktop" tab,
does the picture show the desktop with your little window in it?

I'm still trying to establish it isn't a small image that's somehow got
loaded as wallpaper. However, I don't think so now (though still worth
checking).

I don't think so. I scanned the wallpaper and background choices and
do not see that image anywhere. I think Google Mobile is the culprit
but I had nothing to do with that, nor can I seem to get rid of that
either. Probably because I do not have Admin privs. Oh well.
