I need to manipulate a jpeg2000 image in matlab.Im using version 6.5
and it does not support jpeg2000 file format. does version 7 support
jpeg2000?? Also Is there some sort of plugin so I can utilise this
format with version 6.5??

It's just a wrapper but, probably, it's all you need.
