I have a friend's MacBook Pro here.

Its behaviour suggests that what is wrong with it is that it always
thinks the trackpad/mouse button is held down (it doesn't seem to be
physically jammed).

Is there any utility software that will confirm this, perhaps one of the
USB utilities?
