I've just noticed that my new MacBook Pro is powering down (instantly!)
as soon as I connect my lead from my USB hub.

I removed all the devices from the hub and it did the same and I appear
able to connect the individual devices with no problem. The problem
only goes away if I remove the power lead from the hub to make it a
passive hub.

Worth trying an alternative hub or a problem with the MacBook? What do
you think?

I'd try a different hub first.

That was my inclination too. I'll maybe try using it as a passive hub
for a while too. I can't remember now why it needed to be powered.

*DEFINITELY* first suspect a faulty hub and/or cable. Swap the hub out
first, then the cable. *THEN* suspect a faulty Mac.
