Did a quick test from an XP VM to a Linux server, and saw no obvious problems
after the update. It may of course be this problem is specific to other
circumstances.

Just a thought, though, check your problem isn't caused by LAN card
powersave. This sometimes gets turned back on when any major system-change is
done.

From the technet writeup it seems this patch relates to escalation of
priveleges for a locally logged-on user. Therefore (AFAICS) only of high
concern if malware or a malicious user already has system-access.

More good news: I have about ten more workstations
with KB977165 removed and happy camping has returned.

And, more good news: I also checked with Kaspersky
and we can find no sign of any infection.

Yipee!
