INTRODUCTION:

Over the years, Unigroup has been raffling off review copies of
various big and comprehensive Unix/Linux-related Books published
by Addison Wesley/Prentice Hall... and many of them were authored
by our July 2010 speaker... Mark Sobell. We are pleased to be
able to have Mark present at Unigroup this month.

Mark will be presenting a double topic, on BASH, and on UPSTART.
(We can partition the available meeting time depending on audience
topic preferences).

MAIN PRESENTATION

Topic: BASH Shell Programming and The Ubuntu UPSTART Init Daemon

Introduction:
-------------

Upstart

Because the traditional System V init daemon (SysVinit) does
not deal well with modern hardware, including hotplug devices,
USB hard and flash drives, and network-mounted filesystems,
Ubuntu replaced it with the Upstart init daemon. The
runlevel-based SysVinit daemon uses runlevels
(recovery/single-user, multi-user, and more) and links from the
/etc/rc?.d directories to the init scripts in /etc/init.d to
start and stop system services. The event-based Upstart init
daemon uses events to start and stop system services.

bash

The bash (Bourne-Again) Shell is based on Bourne Shell and has
many enhancements drawn from the Korn and C Shells. It was
developed by the GNU Project and is widely used on UNIX-like
systems. It is useful both as an interactive shell and a
high-level programming language.

Speaker Biography:
------------------

Mark G. Sobell, author of many best-selling books, including A
Practical Guide to the UNIX System, UNIX System V: A Practical Guide,
A Practical Guide to Solaris, and A Practical Guide to Linux,
(all from Addison Wesley), as well as A Practical Guide to Red
Hat Linux, Fifth Edition, A Practical Guide to Linux Commands,
Editors, and Shell Programming, Second Edition, and A Practical Guide
to Ubuntu Linux, Third Edition (available shortly) (all from Prentice
Hall), and has more than twenty-five years of experience working with
UNIX and Linux.

Mark is the president of Sobell Associates Inc., a consulting firm
that designs and builds custom software applications for UNIX and
Linux systems and provides training and support. Mr. Sobell started
working with computers part time after high-school where he worked on
the Dartmouth Time-sharing system where they developed the BASIC
programming language and on IBM OS/360 systems. He started writing
when he worked for microcomputer company Cromemco in the late 1970's.
He published his first book (A Practical Guide to UNIX) in 1982 and
started Sobell Associates in 1984. He has been writing and consulting
ever since.

Unigroup is a Professional Technical Organization and User Group,
and its members pay a yearly membership fee. For Unigroup members,
there is usually no additional charges (ie. no meeting fees) during
their membership year. Non-members who wish to attend Unigroup
meetings are usually required to pay a "Single Meeting Fee".

Yearly Membership (includes all meetings): $ 50.00
Student Yearly Membership (with current! ID): $ 25.00
Non-Member Single Meeting Fee: $ 20.00
Non-Member Student Single Meeting (with! ID): $ 5.00

Nearest mass transit stations are:
'6' to Astor Place (stops right at The Cooper Union),
then walk 1 block East and 1 block South.
'R' to 8th Street, then walk about 2 blocks East

'4/5/6/R/N/Q' to Union Square, then walk South and East.
'B/D/F/V' to Broadway-Lafayette, then walk North and East.

Free street parking in the area becomes available at 6pm.
