Hello All,
I am having a problem which has been going on for about a month.
I have 8 USB ports on the mobo, 6 external and 2 internal
1 of the internal ports is connected to a combined floppy/media reader
the other isn't used.
1 printer is using an external port
1 mouse is on another (the mouse is cordless with a built in 2 port hub)
1 pda is normaly plugged into another port to charge it
The problem is that when I plug any device into 4 of the ports I get an
unknown device mesg in WinXP-Pro(SP2), but it will work in another port.
The problem occurs more often when I plug in a device which draws power eg.
the PDA or my Canon Scanner which is powered by USB. Some times the scanner
is recognised but fails when a scan is attempted.

Please find below a list of everything I have done to troubleshoot the
problem:

Reset BIOS
Reinstalled USB drivers
Disconnected all USB devices and tried each port separately
DIsabled all ports in BIOS then turned them back on 2 at a time
Bought new PSU (antec 350)
Used a different HDD with a fresh install of WIndows
Set USB in BIOS to USB1

If I remember rightly the issue started after I started using the Game port,
obviously I have tried to resolve the issue by unlugging the game port from
the board.

I have tried everything I can think of, I now believe the board is
defective.

Thankyou in advance,
paw17

System:
P4P800 SE (Skt 478)
P4 3.0
1.0Gb Ram
ATI AIW 9600xt
160GB Maxtor HDD

Do you own a voltmeter ? Clip the ground of the meter to one
of the screws on the I/O connectors on the back of the computer.
That is to prevent it from falling into the computer. The
screws on the I/O connector are at ground potential. With the
red lead of the meter, and the meter switched to DC volts
(10 volts full scale), touch the top of the jumper plug on
USBPW56 and USBPW78. The metal on those jumper plugs should
be +5V. Leave all your normal USB devices connected. Are
you getting a full 5V there ?

I think the game port doesn't have any Polyfuse to protect it.
(For an example of a Polyfuse, look to the left of USBPW78.
The Polyfuse automatically recovers from an overload and
in that example, prevents a device connected to the USB
2x5 header, from burning one of the tracks feeding it power.)
Maybe you accidently grounded the +5V on the game port,
and have partially burned a 5V conductor. That conductor
could be shared and used to power the USB headers 56 and 78.

Another test you can carry out, is change the setting of
USBPW56 and USBPW78 to the other position on each. That
will change the power source between +5V and +5VSB.
Perhaps whichever one is burned, switching positions will
restore some functionality for you.

One workaround would be to use a powered USB2.0 hub on one
of the working ports. Some of those devices have a power
brick with 3A of juice on it, suitable for running some
of those heavy loads. A second solution is to get an
add-in PCI card with a USB2 chip on it. A card with a
"NEC" chip would be an option.

Hi Paul,
Thank you for the suggestions I will give them a go over the next couple of
days and let you know.
Thanks again,
Ian
