From: Phoenix on
OK, I tried Macrium with Win 7 RTM. Still won't write to external on my x64
system. Tried it on my laptop running Win 7 RC x32--it ran, but it took a
long time.
Restore from a Macrium image yielded the same errors in the Windows logs.
So I caved and bought Acronis TI 2010, mostly because I needed something now
that would make images from the Recovery CD. Out of curiosity, while I had
TI 2010 installed I did a test restore from an image made in Windows. The
only error was the "unexpected shutdown" one. Perhaps this is inevitable
when using a system that makes images while in Windows, since the system,
when restored on a different date, has no record of having shut down on the
previous date...
I am going to send my observations to Nick in hopes that the info will be of
use, and perhaps a future version of Macrium will be better for me. I like
that it runs in native 64-bit.
I'm not touting Acronis over Macrium; it seems a lot of folks are having
trouble with the current build.
In my limited experiment, I did not, but then I didn't use any of the "bells
and whistles."
I'm still going to make my key images outside of Windows, even when I do get
round to installing the main program, which I might for image browsing and
file restore.
Anyway, I figured I'd let you know how it turned out.

Thanks for the update, Phoenix, I really appreciate you coming back here to
let me/us know. Thank for taking the time to give Nick your feedback -- I'm
certain he will appreciate it.

My own experiences with Acronis (both software AND support) were abysmal.
That said, it doesn't really matter -- whatever works reliably and is stable
is what counts. So I really can't care who the vendor is, as long as I (or
you) can successfully image and restore as needed. If Acronis does the job,
then absolutely stick with it!

I probably won't have a 64-bit installation for some time, but it's nice to
know there are folk out there paving the way for the rest of us. :-) Thanks
again for working with Macrium and giving them some feedback. Happy
Musiking! :-)
