Don't give up on that until you've tried it. I recently
got no laughs and a prompt and informative response
when I wanted to upgrade the memory on a 10-year-old
Compaq desktop. You've probably called someone for
support and heard an automated warning that "calls
are monitored for quality control." Laughing at the
customer is not deemed acceptable quality.
(Laughing behind your back at their next coffee break
is another matter and one which need not concern you --
think of it as an aid to their good mental health.)

Since the scaner is several years old, it may need some internal cleaning
and relubrication.
Your description of the problem sounds like the lubricant had dried up or
gotten sticky with age.
