Mike, thanks.

I'm narrowing down the problem; seems to be that the gmane group for
discuss(a)openoffice.org (openoffice.general) is OK for me but the one for
users@ (openoffice.questions) isn't. It's weird because they are both
subscribed via the same NNTP account. I receive messages in both but can't
send/reply to openoffice.questions.

Ho hum.

Did you respond to the message you received the first time you posted to
openoffice.questions?
You have to confirm message for every group you post to.
