Laptop computer with XP Home Edition when turned on gives company logo then
Windows XP Home screen shows up but then screen goes black-no error
messages. Therefore I cannot get to the start button and run, or any
applications.

I can however get into Safe Mode. I have checked the Startup programs but I
did not see anything abnormal. Is there anything else I can do or should I
just do a reinstallation of Windows XP Home?

I have found LSASS in C:\I386 and lsass in C:\Windows\System32 but I
understand that it can be in different places.

Is there anywhere that I can find what normal applications should be running
while using the Task Manager?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Susan

Guess it really does not shut-down. Think I will have to do reinstall
because cannot do restore with rstrui.exe in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
with the rstrui.exe, I get - the procedure entry point error
RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be locate in the dynamic link
library WINSTA.dll.

Just ran into another snag -- cannot use sfc /scannow got error:
Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.
The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.]

With a reinstall, then you destroy important facts necessary
to first learn why problems exist. For example, what does the
system (event) logs report? That is where the error messages
and warnings about possible future problems are stored (see
the Microsoft HELP if you don't know of these logs). What
does the Device Manager report?

Wildly 'restoring' something without first identifying the
problem can only make problems far more complicated.

In the meantime, what does the manufacturer's comprehensive
diagnostics report? All responsible manufacturers provide
these on the computer (see also recovery console) or on their
web site. If your manufacturer is not so responsible, then
you may need download third party diagnostics or those from
individual component manufacturers (ie disk drive, network
card, etc).

Do not try to fix something without first knowing what is
wrong.

I have tried to determine what causes the problem. I have first studied the
programs at startup. Unfortunately, I have to do everything in Safe mode
because black screen in normal startup will not let me get to anything. I
have considered wiping everything out with clean reinstallation, but Dell KB
under "steps should I attempt to possibly avoid reinstalling MS XP" suggests
restore which I cannot do at this point.

As for System logs, I did a help and there was mention of Dr. Watson (which
has been worthless in past) but I could not set it up with black screen
anyway!

The Device Manager shows no yellow question marks, etc.

I admit that I am no expert but was once told that I have the persistence of
Job which has served me well so far .

I appreciate any advice and have emailed Microsoft many times that I
appreciate their support of the Newsgroups.

Thanks for any help.
