Do you know about the extension repository ?

They provide voting results
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/highestratedreal

as well as download numbers
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/most_pop_ext

This might serve even better than a poll here on the list.

For templates there are similar pages on the template repository
http://templates.services.openoffice.org/en/highestrated
http://templates.services.openoffice.org/en/mostpopular

I'd like to ask people using some extensions or templates to vote for
them on the repositories, so the votings would become more valid just
because of the higher number of votes.

Best regards

Bernhard

Dear Herr Dippold:

It seems to me that you are trying to create/collect a collection of
Oo-related tools that you can publish on a CD, possibly to raise funds in
support of Oo??

This is a laudable objective, although I think you will need more than a
mere CD to handle it, especially as this has a better potential ongoing.

I have created many of my own tools from the pre-computer days on, and the
Open office environment is just an extension of that.

Currently in my own templates folder, which is shared on my network between
Win XP, Win Me and Fedora 12, I see a total data size of about 170 Mb. This
is constantly being updated.

The Hierarchy is as follows:

Templates
Confidential templates
Folder and package templates
Microsoft office templates
Open office templates

And a long diverse list of other templates spanning many diverse
applications.

Under the open office templates heading:

Calc (spreadsheet) templates
Impress Templates
Oo Base Templates
Oo Draw templates
Writer ODT Templates.

This branch alone is 143 Mb. With a file count of 141.

This does not include:

Custom colours and gradients I have created which apply to all of Oo
by default.
Independent support information which may relate to either/or Fedora
& Windows.

These are included in my support files that have a data size of 5.45 Gb and
a file count of 8,514. Hence these alone would have to fit on a DVD-DL and
would not update nicely as there are no DVD-DL-RWs. These are also subject
to ongoing update.

Hence, I wonder if this could be turned into an SFTP server with the
appropriate RPM to support cross-platform usage as a Linux repository as
well as a Windows accessible site.

Since Oo also can operate in the Mac OSx environment, it would also need a
Mac user as a collaborator to maintain the ongoing rendering of these into
Stuffit archives after having established the appropriate Mac forks in each
file, although it may be expedient on some cases for each Mac user to
establish their own forks to suit individual needs. (Tiger and up, please).

Such a site would maintain a membership with a modest monthly or similar
charge, enough to self-finance its costs and provide what financial support
its market would bear to the Open Office development projects as a
non-profit corporation.

In addition to the download areas of this server, each member would have
access to an independent upload area so that ongoing contributions could be
moderated prior to release for securities' sake and offered caveat emptor,
as usual.

However, in writing this, it occurs to me that something like this probably
already exists, and the 2 efforts may need to be homologated, rather than
reinventing the wheel when it may not be necessary.

Cheers all,

Bruce Martin

Hello Mr. Martin!

(I'd prefer "Hi Bruce" as we are both part of the vivid OpenOffice.org
project)

No, not at all.

My OOo related work is more on art, marketing and branding.

I just wanted to point Andy Brown to the official repositories of the
OpenOffice.org extensions project [0], where everybody can upload his or
her extensions and templates providing them for download to other users.

He asked for votes about the user's preferred extensions and templates -
he might find what he wants in these repositories.

Perhaps you mistake me for Andy who in fact likes to add some extensions
and templates to the installation disks he wants to provide for people
with low download bandwidth.

Best regards

Bernhard

PS: With regards to your proposal for integration of your huge
repository around OOo with the existing repositories at the OOo site,
please have a look at [1] and [2]. Perhaps you would be willing to share
some of your templates and extensions with others by uploading them to
the OOo repositories. Discussions on possible optimizations and
infrastructural improvements are most likely to get serious replies on
the dedicated mailing list:

ReHi Bernhard:

It seems I was about as mistaken as I was really unsure.

I now understand that the extensions are in a repository and more or less
what I had suggested actually already exists. Great!

However I wonder about 2 possible details, which I have not caught up with
yet:

1) Is that repository all in .oxt formats for installation within Oo,
or does it also function to serve .RPMs for Linux users of Oo?

---Oops! I just noticed your URLs below and have pasted them into a notepad
for the moment. It's getting late here and I need to stop and eat before
resuming.

My main machine here boots 3 operating systems, BIOS controlled and shares
the data. 2 of these (One Win XP home and 1 Fedora 12) run the appropriate
versions of Oo.

Additionally I have 1 more installation of Oo on a Win Me platform and
another on a Fedora 12 platform (running on older hardware for a planned
special purpose.) Hence you can understand why such questions.

I also have another friend in the background who is a retired IT
professional with a Master's degree who is helping me with the Linux
problems I encounter as I primarily handle the hardware issues with a
background of an electronic technician and an industrial electrician.

Many thanks,

Bruce M.

Yes I am aware of the repositories. I was not aware of the voting
results and will check them out.

I am not to sure of download counts. I have downloaded a lot from both
repositories that I only loaded long enough to see what they were.
Others that I still have loaded are not used. What I was trying to do,
to not great avail, was find out what is actually being used.

If people actually voted for the extensions they use on a regular basis
that would be better.

Andy
