Might be related to the YaST issue.

When I start VirtualBox, I get the notice that the user is not added to
the group vboxusers. So I added the user with `usermod -A vboxusers
houghi` and as far as I can see it is now in that group:
penne:~ # id houghi
uid=1000(houghi) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),108(vboxusers),33(video)

Yet I still get the same message. What gives? I can run VirtualBox as
root, so no issues with that.

Don't take offense, I'm sure you cover all the basics, but did you restart
the virtualbox daemon after adding yourself to the vboxusers group?

You have to restart the machine after. Make sure it is in fact checked
in Yast, users and groups.

Log out of the GUI and log back in... should work.

On Windows, reboots are necessary. On Linux, they're a good excuse to
go make a cup of coffee. It's amazing how many things a cup of coffee
can fix...
