WUAUCLT.EXE errors when updating Windows

From: cardnut on 2 Sep 2009 13:06 I have read all the other comments reharding this issue. Since some of them deal with Vista, I wanted to start my own thread. I have XP with SP3. Everytime I try to update windows components (I just installed Office Extrerprise 2007 as well) I get the WUAUCLT.EXE error pointing to 0x76c941a9. I am not sure if this number means anything, since this is not the only one I have ever seen. I have seen a lot of things from people to try. Is there a current thought on how to correct this. I rebuilt my entire system (wiped my hard drive, reinstalled XP wih SP3) and the problem did not go away. HELP!! :-)
From: MowGreen on 2 Sep 2009 13:49 Are you using IE to visit Windows Update or is the error occurring from Automatic Updates ? Try another attempt at updating. If you're using IE to access WU, close IE. Then open the WindowsUpdate.log (WU.log) and scroll all the way to the bottom for the most recent entries. Suggest you reset Windows Update components: How do I reset Windows Update components? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 Click the Fixit button and choose to *save* MicrosoftFixit50202.msi, do *NOT* choose to run it. Next, clean boot XP. Either use the Guided Help or Method 2 here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 When the system has been clean booted, with the system connected to the net or network, run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi and choose the Aggressive mode. Doing that will rename the subfolders where updates are stored and reinstall the Windows Update Agent. When the Fixit has finished it's operations, restart the system. Undo the steps laid out in KB310353 and restart to normal Windows mode. Now see if it can update.
