From: Guzzifrank on 8 Jun 2010 10:33 New client with existing sbs2008 standard. Outlook started showing disconnected all clients. Found that the mirrored drives for exchange (D:) had broked some time ago due errors on daily report, prior tech had deleted mirror so D was sitting with no redundancy. D: now has errors. Chkdsks etc clear up some errors but drive still shows errors and will not activate. Exchange shows dismounted and failed. I appear to have failed backups. I have not done an exchange restore on a corrupted exchange media before. I will have two new drives on site in a couple of hours and will start by replacing the old dead drive and try mirror. I will also do a restore to an alternate location just to save data. Question: If D: has only the exchange application and the drives are not useable can I replace both drives, name them D: and then do a restore of the application to that now redundant drive? Or do I have to reinstall exchange and then restore the mailbox data? Many thanks. I have two hours until access to the site.
From: Guzzifrank on 8 Jun 2010 15:22 Got lucky. Opened Dell 840, cleaned a lot of dust out, pulled all the drives to check that I was looking at the correct drive to replace, unplugged the known dead drive, rebooted and good drive with exchange worked! I had tried chkdsk /f and reactivate to no avail. I can only assume the 15 minutes I had it powered off was enough to get drive cooled. Installed replacement to the original drive, restarted fine and am creating new mirror right now. Will come back tomorrow and reverse the process so both drives renewed. Will chat with owner about replacing the remaining 2 500 gb drives with newer larger drives. Drives are cheap, email outage is not! Dodged the bullet! I will set this up in the lab and test recovery for the next time.
