In my MS word documents embedded objects (for example, graphs from other
statisistical software packages or citations from Endnote) do not appear
correctly. Instead i have the field codes for these objects (e.g., {EMBED
STATISTICA.Graph\s} ). For the Endnote citations I can highlight the
document, right click a citation and select 'Toggle Field Codes' and the
problem is fixed...temporarily...once i close the document the problem recurs
upon re-opening.

On the View tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box for "Field codes."
You can accomplish the same thing with Alt+F9. The setting should be saved
when you quit Word.
