Problem solved: all my troubles were caused by
SDL. I had to stop SDL from setting the keyboard
into raw mode. For the record, SDL does this in
SDL_fbevents.c which is in src/video/fbcon.

For a couple of weeks now I have been blaming
mplayer for the problems.
