It wasn't around with the PDPs and such. mt was handy, when you needed to skip some blocks (eg the TOC), or even for erasing, rewinding, retensioning or ejecting the tape. mt is just a wrapper around the ioctl system call. ioctl s vary a lot between devices, even between tape devices. So expect mt's source code to be pretty simple, but hairy. Use the source, Bill! HTH, AvK
