On all the relevant sites that I've looked at, .sqm file
extension is claimed by the Operation Flashpoint game.
Every time Windows Live Messenger 8.0 is opened, it
generates files sqmdata??.sqm & sqmnoopt??.sqm in c:\
Is there a reason for that?

Also, is Windows Live Messenger the same as MSN Messenger?

Greetings,

SQM is Software Quality Metrics, aka the Microsoft Customer Experience Program which is part
of Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger is the same as MSN Messenger -- it's basically MSN Messenger 8 with a
new name.

I have disabled this "experience" program within the options of Messenger yet
these files continue to be generated. Isn't there any way to prevent this
from happening?

And who on earth decided on using the root c drive to store these files? I
feel like I am infected with malware every time I browse my files.

Thanks.

Thanks for providing this answer Jonathan,

The key question here is now: how do we get ride of these files and how do
we stop Windows Live Messenger from creating them? I have not opted to be
part of the Micrisoft Customer Experience Program (i.e. the Boolean "Allow
Microsoft to collect anonymouse information about how i use Windows Live
messenge" under Tools, Options, General, is NOT checked).

Thanks.
