thought I would make a different thread with a proper subject,
vs drifting my QFNxxx.TMP thread topic.

I'm using Q2010 Premier Release R10.
Perhaps I have a different setting that causes Quicken to
periodically clean them out. My QFN files only go back 2 weeks, to
6-28-2010.

In my view, a more signicant issue is that Quicken preserves 2 backup
directories.

....\BACKUP appears to contain the backups generated from settings
Edit > Preferences > Setup Backup > Automatic Backup

the others are found at

....\Backups and appear to be generated every time you run Quicken.

As John has pointed out - we haven't seen this sub-dir name used ?
So, this is under the "\Quicken Files\" folder
and has the name of "\backups\" ..... with the added "s" ?

I only have 1 backup folder and it is called BACKUP. Mine is located under
the Quicken folder in My Documents. I'm using 2008 H&B at the moment but
this naming convension on this computer started with 2004. Both my manual
and automatic backups go to this single folder.

Did you ever manually do a backup (File>>Backup) and change the default
folder name?

I did a little exploring.

My Q2010 file organization goes back many years, probably to a Quicken
for DOS version.

Back then, the software resided at C:\QUICKEN, and so I created a data
subdirectory C:\QUICKEN\WORK.

Over the years, the software moved to C:\Program Files\Quicken,
leaving just my data files in \WORK, and somewhen I discovered lower
case, so the data was saved to C:\QuickenW\Work. Which is where it
resides today.

\Work grew subdirectories, \Q04Files and \Q07Files as I upgraded, and
the dreaded \VALIDATE.

Looking at preferences (which I cannot recall changing in years), I
see that --

My automatic backups are set to run every 5th use of Quicken, and to
save 5 backups. Quicken does not provide any choice of names for this
subdirectory. In my case, they are saved in my C:\QuickenW\Work
\BACKUP subdirectory. The files are named using my Quicken file name
+ date + time, thus -- XXXXXX-2010-07-11.PM11.12.QDF-backup. I have
5 such files.

My manual backups are set to run every 3rd use. Quicken offers a
choice of whether and where these are saved. In my case, they are
saved to my C:\QuickenW\Work\Backups subdirectory. The files are named
using my Quicken file name + date, thus -- XXXXXX-2010-07-11.QDF-
backup. I have lots (some 80+ going back to my installation of Q2010,
plus 1 holdover from Q2007).

The 10 GB of files I deleted must have been 3 years worth generated
by Q2007.

Did I select the "Backups" subdirectory at some point? Probably,
though I cannot recall doing so. That would explain others not finding
such subdirectory on their systems.

thanx

if you do a search for the file - quicken.ini -
you'll probably find a couple versions.... on XP...
one default for All Users and also one for each specific User.

open with notepad - and you'll see the entries for the Backup path -
I just deleted mine to see what the Backup screen would default to
and my Q2009 came up with - A:\
SO... not sure what the original manual Backup default would show...
For me, my manual backup was \quicken files\backup2x as in twice
