Going to have to follow this up over the weekend, its looking seriously
borked now, wired networking is not running either!

It appears that the fault was with /etc/wicd/wifi-settings.conf, renamed it
and everything was find - once I had got my python installation and
dependencies with wicd sorted out - I had nuked my python installation
trying to reinstall it from fresh.

Perhaps I ought to report the silent failure as a bug?
