Is it possible to just add a 4gb RAM kit (2 x 2GB) to an existing 2GB
kit (2 x 1GB)?
My bro-in-law tried it with an Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus and the board
wouldn't post. I think he had them both in dual channel mode.

What if they are put in as Slot 1 to 4 as 1gb|1gb 2gb|2gb?

Thought?

Generally, yes, you can do that.

If you want dual channel operation (and, in some cases, if you want the
board to post at all) you have to get them installed into the right
sockets. See the manual; DO NOT rely on color coded sockets because
there are two diametrically opposite ways of color coding the sockets
and both are used on different motherboards.

[There are some motherboards on which a pair of modules go into a pair
of like colored RAM sockets, while on other motherboards, they go into
sockets of DIFFERENT colors.]

Mixing RAM vendors, types, sizes and speeds always has the potential to
create a situation in which a particular motherboard with a particular
BIOS and two (or more) particular types of RAM won't post.

You could take a look through the threads on the Asus forum
and see if there is a memory issue.

My guess is, that chipset is a bit twitchy, and may need some tweaking. One
other thread mentions NB voltage setting as a possible cure. So the BIOS
may not be doing the best job all by itself.

Update for all and Thanks to Paul and Barry..

"Sup

Got the 6GB of RAM running.

They are matched up 2|2 1|1 and I boosted the NB to 1.35v from 'auto' or
'default'.

WoW is loading faster than my old set up, but maybe about %50 if
that....looking forward to next year, I might upgrade my proc and
mobo.....maybe."
