Asked on behalf of a friend (I don't have an Eee or I wouldn't be asking).

I friend has an early Eee (probably a 901 - I didn't check while it was
in front of me) which he doesn't seem to have upgraded recently. Today we
tried to do so but were unsuccessful.

"apt-get upgrade" ran OK through package list retrieval and dependency
resolution but gave up at that point, reporting broken package
dependencies, so it looks like something is stuffed in their repository.
Apparently he's got this far in the past, but the Asus script-monkeys
hadn't a clue (problem not on script) and were apparently giving random
answers - he tried calling a few times and got unrelated suggestions,
none of which worked.

As his installed distro is almost certainly superseded by now, I've just
looked at their site for a complete distro download, but couldn't find
one. I found the directions for transferring the distro from CD/ISO image
to a flash card and make that bootable, I reckon that if we can find a
current distro that the machine can run then we can install it

Can anybody suggest a way forward, such as a source for a new distro (CD
and/or ISO image) that would run on it?

It's Ubuntu, isn't it? I'd go for
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook

I demand that Martin Gregorie may or may not have written...

If you think before you speak, the other person gets their joke in first.

I thought it was something Ausu had cooked up. Its Debian-based but apart
from that it doesn't look much like Ubuntu. About all I know is that the
recovery CD image (which presumably equates to a distro ISO) will fit on
a 1GB flash card.

Noted. Thanks.

Indeed I did. Thanks for the pointer.
