Self-hosted Gmail clone
I was wondering about setting up some kind of webmail app, more for access to old message archives than new ones. I've played with a few, notably lurker and squirrelmail, but they're all rather clunky. I don't really want to host in the cloud on Gmail et al. So I had a look out there to see what else was around... 20 Mar 2010 16:38
Off-Topic Motorbike-like noise
I cannot find the source of the kind of interference one gets from a digital TV or in my case a DVB card, from when a poorly suppressed motor-bike goes by. The card worked fine in my earlier 2008.1 machine but in my new higher performance machine it is dreadful. I have eliminated the application as I experei... 20 Mar 2010 17:45

Using listening sockets from a shell script
Evening all, I'd like to have a shell script which accepted connections over the network and responded to messages sent over sockets. I can do this with good old inetd, but i was wondering if there were other ways to do it. Is there a way to do socket/bind/listen/accept directly from bash? Or any other const... 20 Mar 2010 19:59
Getting WinXP off a FakeRaid setup
I have a machine with 2 x 250G drives, using FakeRaid on which Windows XP is installed (that's how it arrived, not by design). I was going to use Wubi to install Ubuntu so I didn't have to mess around shrinking the NTFS partition but Wubi doesn't (currently) work with FakeRaid setups. I could go back to my origi... 19 Mar 2010 14:23

Processor Upgrade
I have an asus motherboard AM2 socket carrying an Athlon 4200 I understand this mobo has a maximum clock speed of 3.2G I saw a recommendation for upgrade to a Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition but this was quite an old article and these seem as rare as hens teeth. UKPost problem
Hi, I know there has been a closedown notice on the UKPost website (http:// www.ukpost.com) and that Jason is not really that available to do things on the server (the last email I had from him was that his current interest is nothing to do with ukpost). The problem is that my password is now not working (I've... 17 Mar 2010 10:14

Skype can't see working Webcam
Wee cheap Logitech Quickcam Express. Ubuntu 9.10. Cheese works fine, using device /dev/video0. Skype offers only that video device, doesn't use it, doesn't do anything when I press the "Test" button in Options->Video Devices. Any bright ideas? Microphones and Ubuntu 9.10
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Creative Slix system. I've been trying to use Skype. The problem is that the microphone sound is too feint to use, despite switching on the 20dB boost. It's not a hardware problem because I've been running Windows NT using the same hardware and it worked perfectly. Any thoughts? ... 11 Mar 2010 18:00
F12 and PulseAudio
On Sunday I upgraded this laptop to F12 and have found two problems: - setting 'spin down when possible' for AC power prevents it coming out of suspend. Thats annoying, but fixable: don't allow AC spin down. - PulseAudio worked well for about a day and now won't work at all. At one point I decided that mak... 11 Mar 2010 19:08

Grub (not Linux) video mode
Hi, Bit of an irritation rather than a must-have this one. Screen on the old laptop died - but its still a workng computer - so I've hooked it up to the TV.
