Problem with gethostbyname
I am trying to update some code (that I didn't originally write) which uses gethostbyname to turn a name into an IPv4 address. This works well enough most of the time but if the internet connection fails (which it does from time to time because it might be dialup, via mobile phone or WiFi) then the program exi... 7 May 2008 13:16
Are things getting difficult?
Is it just me, or is programming getting more difficult? I'm trying to write a little application (it'll probably be implemented as a perl script) that catalogues files on memory cards. I'd like it to be able to detect when a card is plugged in, scan it quickly to see if any files have been added since we last sa... 7 May 2008 12:26
Removing/replacing open files
My .proclog is getting quite large and I'd like to remove it and start again. I remember reading somewhere that if a file which is being written to is removed it's blocks are not marked as free. What is the best way to remove this without risking removing a file which may be open? Justin. -- Justin C, by... 7 May 2008 11:37
Reconfiguring X server in Ubuntu
The PSU in my sister's PSU went pop (literally) after a recent power surge. I'm hoping the rest of the system survived as it's an Enermax PSU, not a cheap & nasty one. To keep them going and give them time to get a good deal on a PSU online instead of rushing out to Maplins we thought it would be a good idea to ... 6 May 2008 22:31

Novatech laptop X15 M530 wireless Ubuntu Gutsy May 2008
NB F10 to enable the wireless link!!! First I installed Hardy (Ubunutu 8.04) and could not get the graphics driver to work and survive a power down/up - there are some disparaging remarks about SIS (Silicon Integrated Systems) restricted graphics drivers on the Ubuntu forums - eventually I got a "pirated" copy o... 6 May 2008 22:31

Running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) on a desktop PC using (or trying to) a Linksys WMP54G PCI wifi card (that uses a Broadcom BCM4306 chipset.) Trying to connect to a Netgear DG834 adsl router. Which Kubuntu?
I want to upgrade a machine from Xandros 3 OCE (which seems to be entirely neglected by its vendor) to Ubuntu with KDE. The machine is on expensive dialup and I rarely have access to it so having something that needs minimal post-installation updates is important. The Xandros install is 3-4 years old and I hope t... 24 Apr 2008 10:51
Running Windows under Linux virtualisation environments
I'm familiar (for certain values of "familiar") with using Linux virtual servers (Xen, UML) but I know nothing at all about Windows. A colleague has asked about running Windows in virtualisation environments - is it possible to run a Windows server instance on a server running Linux? And, will Microsoft licence ... 24 Apr 2008 02:40
Problem getting Server Side Includes SSI to work on Fedora 8.
Please can someone put me out of my misery. I have come back to this problem several times over the last couple of weeks and have Googled extensively but can't find the solution. One of our applications uses a web interface for control purposes and amongst other things uses a server side include to display a sim... 23 Apr 2008 09:55
