Which netbook ...
.... if you had to choose between 1 Compaq Mini 311c-1101SA 2 Acer Aspire ONE D250-OBK 3 Toshiba NB250 10G (I've been offered that choice .. it's a long story.) Not necessarily to run Linux on - it's mainly for SWMBO so it just needs to work at minimal effort on my part. Just asking here because people are m... 2 Aug 2010 15:53
Dual-boot of Ubuntu 10.4 and Fedora 13
I recently tried and failed to install a dual-boot of the above. IIRC if I install Ubuntu first, I can shrink its partition during the Fedora installation, but a subsequent boot will go directly into Fedora. (IIRC a message at the end of the Fedora install indicated writing of a boot loader, rather than updati... 16 Jul 2010 18:47
UK Gov tells 600,000 staff to dump windopws and do Linux

Training spamassassin
ISTR reading somewhere that spamassassin's Bayesian learning is self-reinforcing, ie when it decides that a mail is spam or ham it does the internal equivalent of feeding it to sa-learn. Is that true, or would I be better feeding emails back to sa-learn even after it's made the right decision? Also, if the repor... 8 Jul 2010 09:09
Strange difference between Remix and Desktop
I have Remix 10.04 on a flash drive and Desktop 10.04 on a CD. If I start the Live CD on my Tosh Satellite, it tells me that the Wireless device is "not ready" and I can't connect. If I run the Remix from the flash drive on the same machine it finds the Wireless adapter and I can connect. Aren't the two just the... 15 Jul 2010 17:39
Tar - it won't exclude files, what am I doing wrong?
I have a file /var/local/backup_excludes that lists directories that contain files which I do not want to backup, the contents look like this: home/justin/tmp/tmp_img_dir/* home/justin/.mozilla/*/Cache/* home/ali/Cookies/* And to backup I'm using the following: tar --exclude-from=/var/local/backup_excludes... 8 Jul 2010 06:58
C introspection
Is there a way to get a C program to print a backtrace of itself, like the ones you get in gdb? I tried backtrace() with backtrace_symbols() and backtrace_symbols_fd() but instead of printing function names it prints /home/tony/boxstard/boxstard/boxstard() which is actually the filename of the executable. I can get... 12 Jul 2010 17:24
