I'm using Eudora 7 in Windows. I'm having problems getting it to work
with a Gmail account that a client set up for me.

I've followed Google's instructions and some that I found on about.com
(which are essentially the same). I get the following message in each
case:

xxxxxxxx, SSL: Collecting mail information (UIDL), LAST [hh:mm:dd AM]
There has been an error trarnsferring your mail. I said:
LAST
and then the POP server (myname(a)xxxxxxxx.com@pop.gmail.com) said:
ERR Not supported

"xxxxxxxx" represents the client's domain name. I'm supposed to access
email through xxxxxxxx.com, not through gmail.com. I wonder if I'm
supposed to say "gmail" instead of "xxxxxxxx" somewhere. That's the
only difference I can see between the settings I used and ones in the
examples. But when I used the same settings in Outlook Express, it
worked. (And yes, I have enabled POP in Gmail's settings.)

Here are my settings:

Generic Properties

Later: I got it to work with IMAP by following the instructions in the
last message of this thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-POP-and-IMAP-en/browse_thread/thread/5452d190631e6d65

I still can't get POP to work, though. I use POP with all of my other
accounts, so I'd like to fix that.

Correct -- the obsolete "LAST" command is no longer supported by most servers.

How long ago was Eudora first used there,
and when did it last work with any POP server at all?

<X-Eudora-Option:UsePOPLast=0>

Instructions for above link are in first NOTE at:
http://www.eudora.com/download/eudora/windows/7.1/RelNotes.txt
(or corresponding file installed with your version of Eudora)

For me, never. For the group of people I'm working with, probably
never. For Gmail users at large, I'd be rather surprised if their site
gives instructions for Eudora users that don't work, and there's no
clear record of that fact among user comments.

I was going to say yesterday morning, but I double-checked, and now I
can say, within the last minute.

Ironically, IMAP has ceased to work consistently. I usually get an
error message the first time I try to use it, and have to try again.
The second time always seems to work.

><X-Eudora-Option:UsePOPLast=0>

Thank you. I'll try that when I have time -- I hope over the weekend.

What error? What Windows version?

An earlier post supplied plenty of details for POP,
but this time a bit too few :)

FYI, on Windows 7, OpenSSL takes longer than ever to initialize,
which impacts Eudora because it relies upon OpenSSL.

Initializing SSL is required only once,
not again while Eudora remains running.

The problem has been acknowledged by OpenSSL.org,
and may be fixed in due course. The two OpenSSL DLLs
supplied with Eudora can be replaced, provided that
one can get compiled binaries (someone recommended by OpenSSL
usually creates these for Windows, and accepts voluntary donations
for the service).
