The text I type into the page does not appear on the page in the code view.
Is there something I need to do ? All that appears after I publish the page
is the footer.

Hard to say anything without seeing your page online
Post a URL to your published page and tell us which text is missing

Are you working with a DWT or Included Page content?
But, as Stefan says; hard to tell without seeing the page(s)
