Hello,

I moved to a new MB, a Gigabyte 'ga-790xta-ud4'. The SATA ports on the
board are labelled as follows:

GSATA3_7 SATA2_0 SATA2_2 SATA2_4
GSATA3_6 SATA2_1 SATA2_3 SATA2_5

.. . . the GSATA ports are for 6 gb/sec devices which I have none yet. I
connected my two hard drives to SATA2_0 and SATA2_1, and I connected my two
DVD drives to SATA2_2 and SATA2_3.

What showed up in the BIOS 'Standard CMOS Features' screen is the following:

IDE Channel 0 Master [None]
IDE Channel 0 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 1 Master [None]
IDE Channel 1 Slave [None]
IDE Channel 2 Master WDC WD5000AAJS-00YFA0
IDE Channel 2 Slave DVD RW AD-7240S
IDE Channel 3 Master WDC WD5000AAJS-22YFA0
IDE Channel 3 Slave DVD RW AD-7240S
IDE Channel 4 Master [None]
IDE Channel 5 Master [None]

Should the DVD drives be slaves of the hard drives?

I played around with the configuration and was able to get a HDD
master/slave relationship on 'IDE Channel 1' but the DVDs are always listed
as slaves on separate channels.

The manual says to connect the SATA cable that has an 'L' shaped end to the
HD. The MB came with two of those connectors. Both should be used for the
two hard drives?

It looks to me like the BIOS/SATA connector relationship is as follows:

IDE Channel 0 ==> '2 x eSATA 3Gb/s back panel ports'
IDE Channel 1 ==> SATA2_4/SATA2_5
IDE Channel 2 ==> SATA2_2/SATA2_3
IDE Channel 3 ==> SATA2_0/SATA2_1
IDE Channel 4 ==> GSATA2_6
IDE Channel 5 ==> GSATA2_7

.. . . which seems odd.

IDE Channel 4 ==> GSATA2_6

You have a Marvell 9128 (two SATA 6Gbit/sec), a JMB362 (two SATA),
and six SATA 3gbit ports on the Southbridge. Maybe the GSATA are the Marvell,
and the JMB362 is the ESATA ?

In any case, they aren't Master and Slave in the sense you're thinking
of them. They don't share a cable, like the old ribbon cables.
They're enumerated that way, for the purposes of legacy OSes,
OSes that probably won't install in this case anyway.

The block diagram for your motherboard, shows it also has a IDE ribbon
cable on the Southbridge ? I don't see that in your list. That
would have "real" Master and Slave on it.

Thanks. I'm all SATA now except for the floppy which can be very convenient
at times.
