I am running Exchange Server 2007 (not SP1) on W2K3 R2.

I have two domains accepted: maindomain.com and otherdomain.com.
The typical configuration for John Smith is to have smith(a)maindomain.com as
his main and default e-mail address, and smith(a)otherdomain.com as another
non-default e-mail address.

When the user smith receives an e-mail sent to his alternate address
smith(a)otherdomain.com, it is fine to answer AS smith(a)otherdomain.com: the
mail flows away and gets to the recipients, no problem. But when he creates
a new message from scratch and fills the field FROM with this non-default
address smith(a)otherdomain.com, he gets this message:

From: Microsoft Exchange
Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:03 AM
To: Sender
Subject: Undeliverable:

Delivery has failed to these recipients or distribution lists:

User smith(a)maindomain.com
You are not allowed to send this message because you are trying to send on
behalf of another
sender without permission to do so. Please verify that you are sending on
behalf of the
correct sender, or ask your system administrator to help you get the
required permission.

smith(a)maindomain.com
#MSEXCH:MSExchangeIS:/DC=local/DC=maindomain:maindomain-EXCHANGE[578:0x000004DC:0x0000001D]
#SMTP#

And the message is not sent, of course.

A workaround is to reply to a message previously sent to
smith(a)otherdomain.com, and then to modify the recipient, subject, and so on.
It works; the message is indeed sent AS smith(a)otherdomain.com.
But I wonder if it's possible to do so with a brand new message.

Any idea?

Help appreciated.
Nicolas

Does he have the "Send As" permission on the AD object with the SMTP
proxy address smith(a)otherdomain.com?

Rich,
I did try to grant the "Send As" permission in ADUC by following this
article
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998291.aspx (the section for
E2K7 RTM).

But the issue is that you can indeed grant the permission to an object such
as smith (username of John Smith) or another user, but not to a specific
SMTP address (smith(a)otherdomain.com in my case).

Where am I wrong?

Best regards
Nicolas

By thinking that the SMTP address is independant of the AD object.

Thanks.
So it's by design in E2K7 and I need a third party software.
I guess my client will stick to the workaround which consists in just
replying to a previous mail sent by anyone to smith(a)otherdomain.com and
changing the recipient, subject and content of the mail.

Thanks for the help.
Nicolas
