When Windows (Vista x64) boot, I get a pop up telling me that Windows can't
check for updates.
When I run Windows Update manually, I get error code 80070424.
I tried running a cmd prompt as administrator and re=-registering everything
and it all succeeds including regserver32 wuaueng.dll but when I get to
registering QMGR.dll it tells me that The module "QMGR.DLL" was loaded but
the entry-point Dllregisterserver was not found. Make sure that "QMGR.DLL" is
a valid DLL or OCX file and try again.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Windows Vista x64 sp1
Security software is Microsoft Security Essentials
No 3rd party firewall
Neither Norton or McAfee has ever been installed on this computer, but
Kaspersky was some time ago.

What anti-virus application was installed before you installed MSE, was your
subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed
MSE?

The 80070424 error usually occurs on 64 bit Vista systems because a
required service for updating the OS is not registered, not running, is
irreparably damaged, or has been disabled.
Typically, it's the Windows Modules Installer, whose executable is
Trusted Installer.exe, not BITS.
Please open the Services console and check the status of

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Windows Modules Installer

Click the Start orb, enter services in the Search field, *right* click
Services.exe and choose 'Run as admin' (like you did with the Elevated
Command Prompt).
Check to see if BITS or Windows Modules Installer are showing as running
services, can you start and stop them, and, IF they are even listed as
Services in the console.

*IF* Windows Modules Installer is listed, can be started and stopped,
and BITS is listed, but can NOT be started, then strongly suggest you
download this Fixit and *save it*:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Close the browser and any other open programs once the download
completes and configure Vista to clean boot:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Once you've done the above and restarted, then run Microsoft Fixit
50502.msi by *right* clicking it and choosing 'Run as admin' again.
Restart afterwards and see if the system can check for updates now.
IF yes, then UNdo the clean boot steps, restart, and see if still can
search for updates.
