I keep getting an error message when trying to send mail. It stopped for a
while this morning, and now it's returned. It happens for a test message
that has no attachment and only one word in the message and for a brief
message with an attachment. The error has two parts:

1. The message could not be sent because its size exceeded the server's
limit. You can use the option, located in Tools | Accounts | Properties |
Advanced, to break messages into smaller parts. Subject 'test new', Account:
'myaccountname(a)cox.net', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '552 xspR1W0015T45M80000000 This message was undeliverable. This
message has been found to be a potential spam message, and has therefore
been blocked. Please visit http://coxagainstspam.cox.net for more
information.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 552, Error Number:
0x800CCC6D

2. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes
for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'myaccountname(a)cox.net', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers. In the Outgoing (SMTP) field
do you have smtp.xxxx.cox.net? xxxx being east or west, etc. depending on
your area, or do you see 127.0.0.1?

If you don't have the correct server information, correct it.

This is usually caused by scanning e-mail, or an anti-spam program.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

My AV e-mail scanning has been turned off for years, and I just checked to
be sure. MPTP is set at 127.0.0.1. I haven't changed this recently, so I
don't understand why I'm suddenly having this problem.

I just realized that the e-mail with the attachment did finally get sent,
although I had received the error messages several times before that. The
other message, which only contains one word, still remains in my Outbox. I'm
only getting the first error message for this. This message is to my name at
an Outlook account, but I don't have any spam filters set to prevent
this--either on OE on with my ISP.

127.0.0.1 is a proxy server setting. If you are connecting through Cox, and
sending through Cox, then that setting is wrong and something is changing
it. With many AV programs, just turning off e-mail scanning is not enough.
You need to remove it and reinstall in Custom Mode and uncheck e-mail
scanning when you see the option.

Since the message finally got sent, you may have a damaged Outbox, or Sent
Items.

Do the following for the Outbox, and if the problem persists, repeat for
Sent Items after you move any messages you wish to save to a local folder
you create.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Outbox.dbx}
and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.
