You could make a square lens, but then you would need to take round
photos and that would be a pain.

Even worse when considering there are no round paper printers with round
papers, round photo processors or even curved & rounded monitors. Maybe
our eyes are round balls for a reason.

How about that for a Pi in your eye?

You are on to something here, a curved sensor (spherical) will sort
out the distortions at wide angles.

Well, there used to be a number of circular ... monitors[1].
Even the usable area of a circular sensor glass is used to
describe the chip sizes of P&S cameras today ...
