I need Internet Explorer 6.0 on my machine so that I can interface with
software on a network. My employer says that Internet Explorer 7.0 will not
work with their software at this time. I went to uninstall I.E 7.0 thinking
that I can install I.E 6.0 from my Windows CD and then return to 7.0 when my
project is finished. When I attempted to uninstall I.E 7.0, Windows gave me a
long list of programs that might stop working if I were to continue with the
uninstall process. Would it be possible to temporarily install Internet
Explorer 6.0 along side of 7.0 on the same machine? What should I do?

Hi Shubee,

First up, if this is a work computer then you should seek their advice
before altering THEIR computers configuration.

You can cloak IE7 to appear as IE6 to your company's servers with the IE7
UserAgent string utility

When you choose 'Uninstall IE7' from the Add-Remove Programs applet, IE6 SP2
will be reinstalled automatically to your XP system (not available on Vista
machines)

Regards.

Actually, I'm working from home so the computer is mine. Windows XP home
edition. :-)

I don't think it's the appearance of IE7 that would cause the problem. The
software that I need to interface with will only work with IE6. Will that
string utility make IE7 work exactly like IE6?

OK. But I was frightened by the threat that I would end up with a bunch of
programs that would no longer work properly. What was the point of that
Windows message if it wasn't true?

Thanks for replying.

Ignore the warnings and uninstall IE7 (but afterwards, immediately check in
at Windows Update and install any critical updates offered; do NOT reinstall
IE7 via Windows Update).

Thank you PA Bear. That was very helpful.

So you don't recommend that I use the IE7 UserAgent string utility?
