In the standard Director 11 installation, I can figure out only one way to get
external 3D content into it: Import via the Shockwave 3D .w3d format. Are there
Xtras for importing other 3D formats, e.g. the .dae Collada format ?

Director 8.5 to 11 only support Shockwave 3D w3d. So, there is no other format that
can be imported into Director.

There are tools to convert different 3D formats to Shockwave 3D. Take a look at:
Sw3dC - W3D Converter - http://www.eee-craft.com/sw3dc/
Free tool that converts to Shockwave 3D. It actually is a projector that uses the
awaW3DTrans Xtra, which is not free:

On Windows, you can use the 3D SpeedPort Xtra to convert OBJ files to w3d.

Here's another Xtra - PolyTrans-for-Director is
http://www.okino.com/conv/pt4director.htm

It allows you to import various 3D formats into Director and teh Xtra will convert it
to Shockwave 3D format.
