From: R on 28 Oct 2009 18:43 I had the same issues. I managed to get around it, and forced windows to install the patch. Basically you will need to fool the patch in to believing you've got the correct version of media center (3.0, 3.1, 4.0, or 4.1) The easiest way to do this is to to edit the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\ and change the ident value to the expected value (in my case I changed it to 3.0) Now re-run the patch update, and it should all run smoothly. ---------------- To get to the conclusion listed above, I had to do the following: download the patch manually from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=46aa443c-4e7b-4bd5-8b4e-0068c3dc0e79&displaylang=en unpack the patch to your hard disk using the command line: WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB973768-ENU.exe /X:C:\Expack This created a directory C:\Expack with the unpacked patch files. Under the Expack directory will be a directory called update, which will include the update executable and an update.inf file If you look in the update.inf, it lists the checks as part of the update install. in this case: [PreReq.OrOp.SymphonyVersion] EqualOp = CheckReg, HKLM, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center, Ident, 0, "==" , "3.0" EqualOp = CheckReg, HKLM, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center, Ident, 0, "==" , "3.1" [PreReq.OrOp.EmeraldVersion] EqualOp = CheckReg, HKLM, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center, Ident, 0, "==" , "4.0" EqualOp = CheckReg, HKLM, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center, Ident, 0, "==" , "4.1" I made the changes to the registry (listed above) using regedit, and then executed the update command from the command line, and the update is applied without issues. Going to System and seeing the version number 2002 is not necesarily accurate because of the way it was originally installed. Go to Media Center, click on settings and you will see, as I do, Version 2005. I hope someone eventually figures this out because it is an important update if your Media Center settings say 2005. From: bill on 29 Oct 2009 12:26 That's is all well and fine for 2002 users but my pc is setup from: Windows XP - Media Center Edition Version 2005 c/w SP2. When I do any updates, the pc REMAINS at Windows XP - Media Center Edition Version 2005 c/w SP2. All Media center updates worked fine. Media center worked flawlessly. Once I downloaded the SP3 pack. After installing SP3 and rebooting... SP3 did a stupid thing and DOWNGRADED my pc to Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3. Media Center 2005 is no more and fail to operate properly. After 3 full installs to clean out bad misc files that may have caused glitches... I can only presume that in Microsofts' eyes...update means to DOWNGRADE the users pc. The only way I can get Windows XP - Media Center Edition Version 2005 c/w SP2 to reain with everything working is to NOT update to SP3. Major flaw there. I would love to see a resolve for this.
