Note I said:
I found the HP driver package, installed it,
set the static IP, and got nowhere....

(Further, this is X.4; while the printer will also be used by a X.6 machine.)

The 4+ doesn't. That feature would be on the 4M+.

The 4+ can be converted into a 4M+ by installing a PostScript SIMM
(specific to that printer model), if you can find one.

> If it does, then it should be possible to get things working.

Even without Postscript, it may be possible to get it working with the
right combination of Gutenprint PCL drivers and network settings.

You probably won't be able to get PCL working over AppleTalk
(EtherTalk), but it should work with "JetDirect Socket" or with LPD.
This part of the trick is to select the IP category when adding a
printer, then choosing the protocol from the list (IPP won't work), and
entering the IP address of the printer.

On Snow Leopard I've been able to get my HP LaserJet 6MP (plus JetDirect
External) working without installing any drivers. I don't recall whether
Leopard was the same.

On Tiger I had to install HP support files, but they require Postscript
in the printer. You may need to install a Tiger-compatible version of
Gutenprint to get the necessary PCL drivers for a LaserJet 4+.

AppleTalk and TCP/IP are both protocol stacks, and one doesn't go "via"
the other (unless you used some technique to encapsulate packets from
one protocol inside the other one, as was done with MacTCP routing IP
over LocalTalk).

If you meant "Mac OS X doesn't nowadays supports AppleShare via TCP/IP
only" (i.e. Apple Filing Protocol is no longer supported on AppleTalk),
that would be correct, but has nothing to do with printing.

Panther (10.3) and earlier support AppleTalk for file sharing and
printing.

Tiger (10.4) and Leopard (10.5) support AppleTalk for printing only.

Snow Leopard (10.6) dropped all support for AppleTalk.

All versions of Mac OS X support printing over TCP/IP via various
protocols.

> This printer does use AppleTalk as such.

Only if you want to. You can also use at least two protocols (LPD and
JetDirect Socket) over TCP/IP.

> Therefore you are out of luck with that route.
> Try printing via TCP/IP to port 9100.

That is the port number used by JetDirect Socket for the first printer
attached to the JetDirect (only printer in the case of an EIO card). The
JetDirect EX Plus 3 uses 9101 and 9102 to access the printer on the
second and third parallel ports.

What a joke, anything prints to an HP4. from DOS 3.3 to Windows 7 with no
problems and all versions of windows have HP 4 drivers built in.

Who in there right mind would buy a Mac, over priced problem box's.

So many Apple products don't work out of the box.

All companies should have such a blind following.

I thought it was Ghostscript, but in any case, that's what I
seek. I thought Apple or HP was bundling it for PCL printers.
That was based on HP LaserJet Mac OS X Installer Print Only Software Solution
for v10.2, v10.3.x, v10.4.x, v10.5
