Hi all,

If there's one thing I really struggle to understand in Linux it's how it
handles sound. Nowadays it just works, which is great for me.

However, I've just applied some updates including to the kernel on my
Cento5.4 box and following a reboot I've lost all sound. Anyone have any
pointers on where to start?

It has an integrated intel audio controller:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High
Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Unknown device 0505
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 66
Memory at 4d200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0
Enable-
Capabilities: [70] Express Unknown type IRQ 0

And I've got a whole bunch of drivers loaded:

snd_hda_intel 427153 2
snd_seq_dummy 7877 0
snd_seq_oss 32577 0
snd_seq_midi_event 11073 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 49585 5
snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 11725 3 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_pcm_oss 42817 0
snd_mixer_oss 19009 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 72133 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 24517 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 14281 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
snd_hwdep 12869 1 snd_hda_intel
snd 55749 13
snd_hda_intel,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_hwdep
soundcore 11553 1 snd

Help, please!

Did the upgrade include an update to Alsa. If so the config. files might
have been overwritten and you may have to un-mute the audio channels, try
running alsamixer.

No. The only sound related update was to xine.

However, running alsamixer did show that the 'Front' channel was indeed
muted. Unmuting it gave me my sound back.
Thanks very much :)
