You haven't said what operating system you are using. If you are using
XP and assuming you installed the IE8 on top of IE6 or IE7 then try
uninstalling it from Control Panel, Add/Remove tab.

Once you have done this, reboot the system, launch any browser you have
got IE6 or IE7 and if everything seems to be OK, you can then re-install
IE8 and everything should work.

I also suggest that for kids, you should create a Limited User account
in XP or Vista (or Win7) so that they can't mess around with the systems
files. Also, your Administrator account and any other account with
Administrator privileges should be pass-word protected.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) as well as your IE version
when posting in an IE-specific forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your next
reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
