Virtual PC 2004, trying to setup an NT Server.
Using either a known good CD, and its ISO image, from a CD and copied to
hard disk,
setup starts, then after a few seconds into the setup process,

"An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered.

The virtual machine will reset now."

Of course, I chose NT Server as the virtual machine type, and raised the
RAM to 256MB.
Also tried NT Workstation, in a new VPC, default settings, same error.

This is running on a P4 machine, with 2GB of RAM.
It installs and runs Server 2003 and WinXP fine.

Any ideas? I'm very new to Virtual PC, and I've never setup an NT on it
before.

Here's the virtual PC's screen:

Lower the RAM to 64M for the install and try that. You can raise it back
after you do the install.

Do you have VPC2004 SP1 installed?

If you have a Prescott processor, be sure you have SP1. NT4 will not run
without it. It is probably the memory, as Robert says.

Ah, okay, I'll try SP1. I JUST received VPC 2004 about two weeks ago,
included with TechNet Plus. Bummer then, if they shipped recently, but
didn't include the service pack.

Updates:
I wasn't real clear, but tried to install NT Workstation, using default NT
Workstation settings (64MB RAM included), same error.

I have since tried it on an old computer here (a PII), and setup went fine
using the same ISO image file. I was thinking I would transport that to my
P4 machine at work, to see if I get past the setup process anyway. But, if
there are issues with NT4 on a P4, then it seems more like obtaining and
installing SP1 is the way to go.

Thanks!

It is with the Prescott chips only. It is fixed in SP1. Install SP1 and
see.
