Hello,

I was reading the description for the 2730 on the Nokia web site. I
was interested in the phone because it seems to be one of few 3G
phones that cost under 100.

The description doesn't mention HSDPA though, so does that mean it is
not as fast as other 3G phones and would I notice the difference?

Thanks.

It's only capable of max 384kbps. HSDPA can theoretically reach
14.4Mbps so a great deal slower.

However, if your only browsing the web on the phone / checking email
it won't make a huge difference. Especially if you use the Opera Mini
web browser which compresses images etc. through the Opera proxy.

If you want to connect it to a laptop then you will probably notice
it's a bit slow.

All depends which area your in, and what network your using. O2's 3G
is not terrifically fast (even in HSPA) and their 3G coverage is
poor. Vodafone 3G speeds are usually pretty good but coverage is not
as widespread as Orange or 3.

I would only occasionally use with a laptop but I think it is better
to do this than buy a dongle, especially as the credit only lasts a
month on the dongles, which isn't good for occasional users like me.

Even though laptop use would be occasional, I think I would be better
looking for a phone with hsdpa so that it is there when I need it. Are
there any hsdpa phones < 100 yet?

I never knew that, thanks.

Nokia 5230, runs S60v5. HSDPA, A-GPS, touchscreen. 60 quid including
tenner topup (but can get 7.50 cashback). Probably unlocked. Last few
available:

If you miss that offer, there are various around the 70-80 mark.

Depends what you want to use the phone for, but I find plain 3G a bit
annoying when doing any kind of downloading. For browsing it's OK, and the
phone might not be quick enough to keep up anyway (but I have no experience
of HSDPA with phone browsers).

There are plenty of secondhand 3G phones around for a lot less than a ton.
About 15 quid I imagine is the starting price.

Although not very detailed and doesn't distingush between areas of 3G
and HSPA the maps are quite interesting. There's quite a difference
between Orange and O2!
