When I Use Windows(xp/2003) service to start OracleStartORCL
(Oracle Database Server 7.3.4.x service starter)
I have recently "Oracle Service Controller Error"!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
szAppName : STRTDB73.EXE szAppVer : 7.0.0.0 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 0012e854
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This service show stop! But Windows 2000 is right, it start Normally!
But althought it has error at 2003/XP, Database work greate! I can Connet,
Select, Update...

If I did not use OracleStartORCL, Use command
x:\orant\bin\oradim73.exe -startup -sid ORCL -usrpwd pass -starttype
srvc,inst -pfile x:\orant\database\initorcl.ora
It start Normally!

So! STRTDB73.EXE does not work at Windows XP / Windows 2003?
How do I solve this problem?

Thanks!

Jackie Chang.

By upgrading to a support version of Oracle *certified* for the O/S
you are using. This means 9iR2 minimum.

You are ON Your Own.

Thank you very much!

I am developer. Some cusotmer use Oracle 7.3..4 or Oracle 8.1.7.
I use Windows 2000 for develope before, It install Oracle 7.3.4.x and Oracle
8.1.7 at same computer.
They start normally no error!
Now I change 2000 to XP, Oracle 7.x have recently "Oracle Service
Controller Error"!

Why use difference version of Oracle, Because Oracle optimize way is
difference!
I need test sql on them!

But althought Oracle 7.x has error at 2003/XP, database work greate!
I think STRTDB73.EXE cann't check new os service status.
It has patch?

Thanks!

You can't be serious. Oracle has desupported Oracle 7.3 years ago,
before Win2k and Win XP even existed!!
And there has never been a version of any Windows product that was
fully downwards compatible.
If you are going to request a patch for this from Oracle Technical
Support (though I doubt you have a support contract, which is very
unprofessional behavior towards your cursomers), they will just drop
the phone on you, and your case will be the joke of the month.

Hi,

We have seen it all the time, people running on database software which
is decades old, and I mean *decades*. Most often, their operating
systems and hardware are also decades old. But running a decade old
database server, on a 'new' OS like 2003, is like filling your Mustang
from 1950 with led-free fuel - it might work - but it never will be good,
and you might ruin the engine.

Hosnestly, I know that these old databases might be a problem,
but for god sake run a Virtual machine with the certified OS
beneath it. Oracle Support will not only laugh at you, they probabely
want a serious talk with you why you take such high risks.

But again, Oracle consulting firms love these old databases. They earn
a lot of money on the hours, and after having paid them, they always
can say "This oracle database is not supported", or "you should
definitly upgrade",
