When I purchased my present printer, I had two criteria in mind. I wanted
separate ink cartridges as every tricolor cartridge I have used had one
color run out long before the others. It also needed network connectivity.
I selected the HP Officejet 6500, the wired version. It networked
painlessly and so far as performed very well as a printer, a copier, a
scanner and a fax machine. Normally it retails for about $150, however if
you can catch it on sale, it will be much less. I paid about $100 for mine
at Best Buy.

If you want to go the separate route, the same print engine is in the
Officejet 6000, without the scanner/fax/copier functions.

I use my printer primarily for printing, mainly black but some spot color.
My sons do a lot of color printing. It's reasonably fast, does an excellent
printing job. I had some photo paper from a previous printer and decided to
try out a photo on the HP. I was impressed with the results, It looked like
a real photo to me, rather than a printed picture.

The printer is noisy on startup and after the print job is completed. I
don't know why but it seems to be a HP thing now. We just got a color
laserjet at work, replacing an older color laserjet. When we start it up,
it humps and grunts and groans. Once it's initialized, it does an excellent
job of printing.
