I used to think that Nikon has no own sensor production and that they
buy the sensors from Sony. Isn't this the case?

All Nikon's full frame (FX) sensors are designed in-house by Nikon but
they are manufactured under contract by Sony.

There is no Sony input to the design of Nikon FF sensors.

There were some early rumours that Sony was using sensors in its A900
bodies that had been rejected by Nikon, but they were not true.

Nikon's DX range of APS-C size sensors are also Sony-made. There may
well be something in common with Sony sensors of that size, but I
don't know.

[I have a Nikon D300 which I keep as a spare camera, but other than
testing it occasionally to make sure it works, which is fairly
essential for a back-up, I hardly use it.]

Not sure what that means, but Sony has been manufacturing sensors for
years, so they do have the knowhow to design sensors, but Nikon is not
known as a sensor design expert.

What does Nikon design mean? Perhaps a specification, stating that a
sensor has a size of 24x36mm and a pixel count of 24 million?

Much more than that, Alfred. There are some Nikon documents around about
their sensor design you may be able to find. One which came quickly to
hand was:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0307/03071802nikonsensor.asp

http://www.nikon.com/about/technology/core/optical_e/cmos/index.htm

Sorry I couldn't find anything more recent.

Cheers,
David

The only question then is, why don't Nikon ask some fab in Taiwan to
produce the sensors, instead of a direct competitor who might copy their
design or benefit in some other way from the knowhow transfer.
