Hi -

I'm getting back into using Authorware after a while on other projects. I'm
not an experienced user and am running into problems.

I'm using Authorware 7.02. I imported an .avi file into Authorware and am
trying to publish it.. I've received a couple of messages through my various
efforts when I try to publish:

"One Step Publishing Aborted." The Details buttons shows that:

"This process cannot access the file because it is being used by another
process.

After getting this message I searched the Aware archives and found a posting
dated 4 Oct 2001. The error being received was the same and the user was
advised to uncheck or delete the .avi file from the Publishing "Files" tab. I
did that and the publish worked fine. But, when I went to play the .avi file in
the .exe there was an error dialog box that appeared:

" A problem was encountered while trying to play the sound in icon
"filename.exe". The internal sound driver reports the following error: "Xtra
not found".

After hitting "continue" a couple of times my published piece worked fine.
But, the error always comes up whenever I want to play it.

I've since tried to publish again and added the .avi file back to the Files
tab but now get another "Aborted" result and the Details show:

"Error: files already open elsewhere"

Has anyone got any ideas as to what I should do next?

Thanks for any help.

Are you editing the movie somewhere at the same time that OBP is trying
to copy it?

Is it definitely the AVI file that is throwing this error? What does the
log file say exactly?

I wasn't editing the avi anywhere else and had actually rebooted a few times
to be sure nothing else was interefering.
I tried again today and the file published fine without an "abort" error.
But, now I think I'm having codec problems.

When I play the published piece and try to access the module the avi's in
using a button, I receive the following in a dialog box:

A problem was encountered while trying to play the sound in icon
"myfilename.exe". The internal sound driver reports the following error: "Xtra
not found.

When I hit the "continue' button in the dialog box, I'm still at the entry
point with the button. When I hit the same button again I get the same dialog
box. But, the 3rd time I hit the button I can access and attempt to play the
avi. The avi plays with sound (which surprised me after the previous error
message!) but without video. There is a message that:

"video not available, cannot find 'vids:tscc decompressor"

So, do I have two problems or just one? Is it the fact that the tscc codec is
missing (this is a Camtasia-produced avi) and that I've done something to
delete a sound driver Xtra? Or, is it all just a codec problem?

I wish I understood more. If a codec is missing can I insert it somehow? And,
if I'm missing a sound driver (which I don't understand because I can hear the
audio) how might I fix that?

Sorry for so many questions. I really appreciate your help.

Thank you!

Authorware automatically picks up sound xtras for sounds used in icons, but
not button sounds. Most button sounds are annoying and unprofessional, so I
look at it as Authorware's way of reminding us not to annoy our users. But
if you simply must have the button sound, you can either add the sound to an
icon that never gets played or you can read the help on files you need to
distribute and add it manually.

The other problem is another problem :-). Recode it with a more prevalent
codec, or provide the codec installer in the package.

Amy -

I removed the button sound and that problem is gone so that's one down.

Unfortunately our users don't have administrative rights so I can't have them
install the codec to play the .avi. I should be able to use Camtasia to
provide another file type such as flash or mpg and import them into Authorware.
Well, at least if I get flash working it will allow interactivity when I get
to that point with Camtasia.

Thanks for your help - I appreciate it.
