The UPS has line protection for the telephone
line.

The two jacks are unhelpfully labelled "in" and
"out."

Which one goes to the computer?

line in is where the unprotected input goes into the surge protector.
line out is where the protected output comes out of the surge protector.
the jack from the ups labeled out should connect to your computer modem.

Thanks.

That makes sense, but unfortunately it makes sense the other way, too,
at least to me.

My suspicion was that it might actually be symmetric and not matter.
