I'm running XP Pro, with all upgrades to date. on an Acer laptop.
About once a week or maybe 10 days, after I put the mchine into
standby mode and return later, the full sreeen is back and I get
a message that SCardSvr is running thus preventing the shutdown.
Never, in the several years I've owned the machine, has the card
reader been used. What can be causing this

If you never use iTunes or Secure Credit Cards, disable the service.

Some malware has been known to camouflage itself in SCardSvr. if you are
not using a card reader, I suggest just turn off the service (Control
Panel, Admin Tool, Services) and just right mouse click and select
"Disable". Check the file size (should be around 93-94K). Compare the
one in Windows\System32 vs the one in the i386 folder of the service pack.
